exposing your website…how?

Having a sharp and user friendly website is a must in today’s marketplace. In order to gain recognition for your brand or to be taken seriously as a business, requires a great web presence. For out of town visitors, having a website that showcases your business and its services is a must. Just the other day, we were looking for a specific service in our hometown, and without knowing it, we started narrowing down our choices by 1) Did the company have a website, and 2) Was the website user friendly, provide the information we needed, and was it well designed. As we thought about this, we realized that we were conducting a usability test against ourselves. What do people want to see when they search for a business on the web? They want to see a well designed and informative website, one that is very user friendly, and allows them to find the information they need as quickly as possible. Let’s face it, without a web presence in today’s market place, business will become slower, maybe even non-existent.

So the question is, How do we expose our website?

We all know that search engines love content. Guess what? Blogs all are about content. Let’s use this to our advantage when creating a website for our business. Imagine if you had a small five page website with the typical about us, services, and contact us pages. That content becomes static over time and less interesting to the average viewer. Now, add a blog to that website, you have created an endless supply of potential content. Over the course of a few years, if you were to publish a few blog posts a week on specific topics geared towards your industry, you would have hundreds of blog posts with very rich and relevant content. This, along with having a sharply designed website, will draw more search engine traffic than that other website you had, giving your business a much stronger web presence that you could have ever had with the static website.

Remember one thing, a website without content is like a business without services, no one will come.

You are probably aware that we love to read the design blog, Smashing Magazine. They had another great post today on the 7 Principles of Clean and Optimized CSS code. In this article, they talk about the principles you need to consider when writing your CSS to help keep it optimized and clean. Best Buy to sell iPhone3G?

According to AppleInsider.com and other sources (Engadget), Best Buy may be close to offering the Cupertino-based Apple’s newest iPhone model, the iPhone3G, as early as next month.

This would make Best Buy the first independent U.S. reseller to offer the the highly sought after touchscreen handset outside of Apple and AT&T. To find out more, read this article.

Width of the fixed layout

Smashing Magazine

had a recent blog design survey that was sent out to web designers all over the place. One of the main questions that I wanted to see the feedback on, was a question about fixed layout widths in web design.

As we have observed a strong trend toward fixed, pixel-based design layouts, we have decided to take a closer look at these layout and try to detect common attributes of such layouts. In particular, we have considered the width of the fixed layout which usually corresponds to the width of #container or #wrapper. Apparently,

* 9% used ≤ 800px
(PostSecret, Seth Godin, Google Blog, BeppeGrillo.it),
* 15% used 801 – 900px
(Neatorama, Kottke, DailyKos, Perezhilton, TUAW, Yanko Design, Scobleizer),
* 20% used 901 – 950px
(Huffington Post, BoingBoing, TreeHugger, Dooce, Blogoscoped, SearchEngineLand),
* 56% used 951 – 1000px
(ars technica, Lifehacker, TechCrunch, ProBlogger, A List Apart, TMZ, Wired, GigaOM, Joystiq, Zenhabis, Copyblogger, Consumerist, Slashfilm).

Conclusion: one can identify a clear trend toward wide fixed layouts of the width 951 – 1000px.

This survey shows me, and should show you, that the days of the old 800 x 600 screen resolutions are running out, actually they are already gone.

Google Maps Launches Walking Directions

Google launched another version of their online maps program. Google Maps Walking Directions is a great new tool for city goers who are trying to save money on gas, parking, or just want to get out an get some exercise.
